The Blog Content Schedule to Get More from Your Marketing Efforts

A regular workflow produces better blog content and better results.

Let’s face it. Your blog is a serious part of your marketing. So why then, do you treat it like an afterthought? As part of your marketing, it’s part of your business and should be treated like a business. Establishing a workflow on your blog helps to ensure you produce quality content that brings value to your current customers and brings new ones to your site. Follow this workflow to get the most out of your content marketing.

Establishing a Blog Workflow

If the ideas I’m presenting are new to you, you probably haven’t yet decided how often you should publish on your blog. Your schedule will depend on your goals and the traffic returns you see your content bringing. A good rule of thumb is to start with two posts a week and adjust as needed to offer the right balance of time invested to traffic realized.

Choosing Topics

How do you come up with two topics every week that engage current customers and attract new ones? One great place to start is your FAQ. Every question that your customers ask about often is a potential topic for a blog entry.

You should also have feelers out through the business for topics that might interest customers. Have customer service let you know when they have a meaningful interaction with a client so you can write about it. Stay in touch with design teams and offer sneak peeks at what you have in the works. Giving customers a look inside your business makes them feel connected to you at a deeper level, so topics like this make great entries.

Publishing

Writing two blogs a week yourself is probably not going to happen. If you don’t have the right person in your ranks, look for a freelancer or a web-marketing agency that can help you produce the content. These individuals can help you do all the hard work, like finding topics, writing the articles and optimizing them for SEO. Speaking of SEO, it’s an important step in the publishing process.

Before you allow anyone to hit “publish” on a blog post, it needs to be reviewed by someone who can apply the following SEO principles to every post before it goes live:

  • Research and choose target keywords or phrases, weave them into the content.
  • Link back to existing related blog content.
  • Add Google authorship tags
  • Check meta description, titles, images and content for keywords and phrases.
  • Is the image used “sticky?”
  • Does the H1 tag center on your keyword?
